Jillian and Brandon told me something right away that made me so excited for their day.
They were not picture people. They did not love attention. They wanted real moments, candid reactions, and the kind of wedding photos that feel like you are right back inside the day when you look at them later. That is my favourite kind of brief. Add in the fact that they chose The Guild Inn Estate, one of my favourite wedding venues in Toronto, and I knew we were about to make something special. The Guild Inn has everything I want as a photographer. Gorgeous architecture, a massive park right outside the doors, and endless options for portraits that never feel repetitive, even if you photograph there a lot.
This wedding was low key in the best way, emotional in all the right places, and full of those in between moments that tell the real story.
First Look at The Guild Inn Estate
We skipped getting ready and went straight into the good stuff.
I met Brandon first, and the guy showed up with a smile that could light up the whole property. He also wore a green suit that somehow looked both bold and classic at the same time. Not everyone can pull that off, but Brandon absolutely did. We did a few quick groom portraits while we waited for Jillian to arrive, and honestly it felt effortless.
When Jillian arrived, we kept the first look private. Quiet. Just the two of them, away from guests, away from distractions. For a couple who does not love attention, this kind of first look is perfect because it gives you a moment that is actually yours.
As soon as they saw each other, everything softened. Tears, big smiles, that instant feeling of, ok, we are really doing this. That is the magic of a first look, especially at a venue like The Guild Inn where you can find calm corners that still feel beautiful and cinematic.
Private Vows Before the Ceremony
Right after the first look, Jillian and Brandon read private vows to each other.
This was such a them choice, and it is something I recommend all the time for couples who want an intimate wedding day. Private vows let you speak from the heart without feeling like you are performing for a room. You get to be honest, emotional, and fully present.
I gave them space, stayed quiet, and photographed the moment as it unfolded naturally. The reactions were real, the tears were real, and the photos feel like you are standing right there with them.
If you are planning a Guild Inn wedding and you want candid wedding photography, private vows are one of the best ways to create those unscripted moments.
Portraits Around The Guild Inn
One of the biggest perks of doing a first look is how much it helps the timeline.
We were able to do portraits and group photos before the ceremony, which meant Jillian and Brandon could actually enjoy cocktail hour with their friends and family after they got married. That mattered a lot to them.
We made our way to the iconic Guild Inn arches and stone structures, because if you get married at The Guild Inn Estate and you do not take photos there, you are missing out. That spot is a must, and the best part is it never looks the same twice. The light shifts, the season changes, and every couple brings a completely different energy.
We kept portraits simple and natural, lots of movement, lots of real connection, and nothing that felt overly posed. They were not the kind of couple who wanted a long portrait session, but even with a shorter window, we still created something beautiful because they trusted the process and stayed present with each other.
Ceremony at The Guild Inn Estate
Their ceremony took place in the covered outdoor ceremony space at The Guild Inn, which is such a great setup for Toronto weddings. You get the fresh air, the trees, and that park feeling, but you are still protected if the weather changes.
They also had a family member officiate, which always adds something you cannot fake. Someone who knows you brings personal stories, inside jokes, and a level of emotion that hits different.
The ceremony was heartfelt, full of reactions, and the front row was emotional. One of my favourite moments was right after they got married, when friends rushed in with hugs, happy tears, and that total release of excitement. Those are the candid moments Jillian and Brandon wanted most, and The Guild Inn is perfect for that because everything flows naturally from ceremony to the park to cocktail hour.
Cocktail Hour Candid Moments
Cocktail hour is where this wedding really came alive in the way they wanted.
They focused on being with their people. Guests were coming up for hugs, catching up, laughing, and taking photos together. I kept my eyes wide open for the in between moments, the quick hand squeezes, the reactions between friends, and the family connections you do not always notice on the day.
They also chose to do a private cake cutting before the reception, another low-key choice that fit them perfectly. It gave them a quiet moment together without a crowd watching, and it kept the focus on what mattered, which was spending the day with their people without feeling on display.
Reception at The Guild Inn
The reception space at The Guild Inn Estate is always a win. It is elegant, warm, and it photographs beautifully. The lighting and layout make it easy to capture everything without forcing anything.
Jillian and Brandon kept the reception true to who they are. There were emotional moments, including a shared dance moment with their parents that created a really beautiful story in the photos, and then their first dance followed.
What I loved most was how the reception felt relaxed. No pressure, no performative energy, just a real celebration. Even though they are a low key couple, you could feel how much joy they were holding inside, and it showed most in the way they looked at each other when they thought nobody was watching.
Quick Night Portraits With The String Lights
Jillian and Brandon were not interested in wandering off for a long nighttime portrait session, and honestly, good. That is not them.
But I did convince them to step out for a couple of minutes, drinks in hand, and just sit together under the string lights. No posing, no pressure, just a quiet little reset before going back to the party.
Those photos ended up being some of my favourites because they feel exactly like who they are. Casual, connected, and real.
Final Thoughts
Jillian and Brandon, thank you for trusting me to photograph your day the way it actually felt. Quiet moments, big emotions, and candid wedding photography that tells the truth. If you are planning a wedding at The Guild Inn Estate in Scarborough and you want photos that feel real, relaxed, and story driven, I would love to hear what you are planning.
