Terri and Jeremy Malaparte Wedding in Downtown Toronto
Terri and Jeremy’s wedding at Malaparte was one of those days that reminds me why I love photographing weddings in downtown Toronto. The energy was high, the details were beautiful, and everything felt intentional without feeling forced. It was a late summer wedding with skyline views, a white tent ceremony, and the kind of reception design that deserves its own moment of silence before anyone walks in.
I was already excited for their wedding because of their Distillery District engagement session. Terri and Jeremy showed up with serious style, and you could tell they cared about the little choices that make photos feel elevated. Even better, Jeremy was fully involved in the creative process, throwing ideas in, leaning into moments, and making it feel like a true collaboration. When couples do that, the photos always go to another level.
And they did not disappoint.
Getting Ready at Hyatt Regency Toronto
The morning started at Hyatt Regency Toronto, right in the heart of the Entertainment District. Terri and Jeremy decided to get ready together, at least for part of the morning, and it worked so well for them. The room was big, bright, and calm, and even with a small group, it felt full because the vibe was full of joy.
Hair and makeup was done by Louminous Makeup Studio, and Terri looked unreal. Clean, polished, and still totally her. There is something about great makeup and hair that still looks natural in photos, and Sherry nailed it.
Terri and Jeremy started the day with a gift exchange and letters. Those moments are always gold for documentary wedding photography because nothing is staged. The reactions are real. The laughs are real. The nerves and excitement are real. It is also a perfect reminder that you do not have to follow a traditional timeline to have an emotional wedding morning.
Then we got to one of my favourite parts of the entire day.
The Eyes Closed Dress Moment
Terri wanted Jeremy to help close her wedding dress, but without seeing it. So we did it with Jeremy standing behind her, eyes closed, trying his best to fasten the dress purely by feel. It was hilarious, sweet, and such a perfect example of a couple doing things their way.
He gave it a real shot, then admitted defeat like a champ. Terri’s maid of honour stepped in to finish the dress, and we got the best mix of laughter and genuine moments out of it.
Terri’s wedding dress was from Felichia Bridal, and it looked incredible. The way it fit, the way it moved, and the way it caught the light by the window made every photo feel like a magazine spread without losing the realness of the moment.
We took a few groom portraits of Jeremy by the window while the dress moment was happening, and his suit from Garrison Bespoke looked sharp and clean in that soft natural light.
First Look in the Hotel Room
They also chose to do a first look before leaving the hotel, which made the whole day feel calmer. We set them up in separate spaces, hands meeting at the doorway, then the moment they turned and saw each other, everything slowed down.
Jeremy’s reaction was pure joy. Terri looked like a dream. We kept it intimate, quiet, and real, then took a few classic bridal portraits by the window while everything was fresh.
Then it was time to head to Malaparte, which was literally a short walk away.
Walking Through Downtown Toronto to Malaparte
One of my favourite parts of weddings in downtown Toronto is the city becomes part of the story. Terri and Jeremy chose to walk to the venue, and we used that moment for candid photos in the streets. It is such a simple thing, but it adds a documentary layer that makes the final gallery feel like a complete story of the day.
You can feel the shift in energy in those images. The calm morning becomes wedding day adrenaline. The city is moving around them, and they are just locked in with each other.
Couple Portraits at Malaparte and TIFF Lightbox
Malaparte sits on the sixth floor of TIFF Lightbox, and the building itself is a playground for portraits.
We used the lobby, the theatre spaces, the corners with clean lines, the spots that feel cinematic without trying too hard. Terri and Jeremy were down for all of it, which is why we got such a strong mix of classic portraits, creative frames, and dramatic angles.
Then we found a piano. Terri plays piano, so we leaned into it. This is exactly what I mean when I tell couples portraits should feel like you, not just like a pretty background. Those images are not only beautiful, they actually say something about who Terri is.
We continued up to Malaparte’s outdoor areas and staircases, and of course we pulled the Toronto skyline into the portraits. If you are getting married in downtown Toronto, you want photos that show where you are. Malaparte makes that easy because the view is right there.
Family Photos With the Skyline
Before the ceremony, we did family photos with the skyline behind us. This is one of the best parts of Malaparte for Toronto weddings. You do not have to leave the venue to get a strong portrait backdrop.
Family photos are not always the most exciting part of the day, but they are the photos that become framed, printed, and passed around for years. We kept them efficient, clean, and warm, then moved straight into ceremony time.
Ceremony at Malaparte Under the Elegant White Tent
The ceremony took place under Malaparte’s white tent, and it looked luxury in the most modern Toronto way. Bright, clean, elegant, and anchored by that skyline view. The floral arch by Green Garden Florists brought the whole ceremony to life. The design was full, soft, romantic, and it photographed beautifully from every angle.
Terri and Jeremy could not hold back the tears during their vows. That is my favourite kind of ceremony to photograph, the kind where nobody is trying to look perfect. It is just real. We also had live violin during the ceremony, and it added so much emotion to the atmosphere. It made the whole space feel cinematic and intimate at the same time.
Why having two photographers matters
This wedding is a perfect example of why a second photographer is such a big deal.
During the first kiss, one angle can capture the couple, but a second angle can capture the families, the reactions, and the room energy at the exact same moment. You get the story, not just the pose. That is what makes the gallery feel complete.
Cocktail Hour and Reception Room Reveal
Right after the ceremony, we moved into cocktail hour and the room reveal. Malaparte’s in house team, Elements, handled the room and the details through the venue, and the result was stunning.
This was one of those receptions that deserved a first look. Terri and Jeremy walked in and you could see them processing it in real time. The flowers, the candles, the colour palette, and the glass surrounding the space with the Toronto skyline outside, it felt like the room was glowing.
They also took a quiet moment to eat together before the room filled up. Chelsey captured some of the sweetest candid photos of them feeding each other, laughing, and taking a breath. Those in between moments are always the ones that end up being favourites.
They also had a floral wall with a neon sign for guests, and it was a huge hit. Everyone wanted a photo there, and it added so much personality to the guest experience. Later in the night, their photobooth and content capture was handled by Ivory Studio Booth, which is a perfect match for this kind of modern downtown Toronto wedding.
Reception, First Dance, Speeches, and Games
Terri and Jeremy entered the reception and went straight into their first dance. It was choreographed, elegant, and fun at the same time. They absolutely nailed it. Then the speeches kicked in. A lot of laughs, a lot of emotion, and that perfect balance where the room feels connected.
And then the games started.
I love when couples include games at the reception, especially when they add real prizes. Terri and Jeremy had an air fryer as a prize, which is honestly genius, because it made everyone actually care. People were locked in. Reactions were big. The energy stayed high.
From a photography perspective, reception games are a cheat code for candid photos. People who normally avoid cameras suddenly give you the best expressions of the night.
Music for the night was handled by DJ Rich Sweet, and the way the room moved from speeches to games to party felt effortless.
The Lion Dance Moment
Right after the speeches, they brought in a lion dance performance, and it completely changed the energy in the best way. It was loud, colourful, and exciting, and you could see kids and adults reacting like they were watching magic happen.
Lion dance is traditionally performed to bring good luck and fortune, and to ward off negative energy, which is why it is such a meaningful performance to include at a wedding.
It was not just entertainment, it felt like a celebration and a blessing wrapped into one moment.
Nighttime Portraits and the Second Dress
Before the night ended, we stepped outside for nighttime portraits with the Toronto skyline. This is one of the reasons Malaparte is such a dream for wedding photos. You can get clean modern night portraits with the city lights, and you do not need to go anywhere.
Then Terri changed into her second dress, and wow. It was the perfect party dress. Elegant, fun, and made for movement. We got a few more creative nighttime portraits with the second look, and it felt like the perfect ending to the story.
Final Thoughts
Terri and Jeremy’s Malaparte wedding was the definition of downtown Toronto done right. Style, emotion, skyline, and a timeline that felt relaxed because they made choices that fit them.
If you are planning a Malaparte wedding and you want photos that feel editorial but still real, with candid moments, creative portraits, and a full story from start to finish, this venue is one of the best in Toronto.
Terri and Jeremy, thank you for trusting us, and for bringing so much joy into every part of the day.
