There are weddings that look beautiful, and then there are weddings that feel like something. Christina and Devon’s winter wedding just outside Cambridge felt like something.
From the second I walked into their Airbnb tucked away in the woods, it didn’t feel like a “wedding morning.” It felt like a group of people who actually like each other, hanging out, laughing, taking their time, and soaking it all in. No rush, no stress, just real energy.
I had been looking forward to this one for a while. After photographing their Fall engagement session at Scarborough Bluffs, I already knew these two were fully in it. They trust each other, they trust the process, and they don’t hold back. That combination always leads to something special. And this day delivered.
Getting Ready at a Winter Airbnb in Cambridge
They rented this beautiful lodge house surrounded by snow, and honestly, it was the perfect setting for a winter wedding morning. Wood textures, soft light coming through the windows, Christmas decor already built into the space, everything just worked.
They weren’t interested in the typical “getting ready” photos either. No staged makeup shots, no forced moments. What they cared about was the feeling of the morning. The details that mattered, the people that mattered, and the time spent together. So that’s exactly how we approached it.
Upstairs, we focused on the important details. Dresses hanging, rings, little Harry Potter touches, and a few personal items that told their story. Downstairs, it was just people hanging out, talking, laughing, helping each other get ready. And then things started to get emotional.
Reading Letters Side by Side
Instead of doing a traditional first look right away, they chose to read their letters together, sitting right beside each other. Not facing each other. Not staged. Just… together.
They started reading, and within seconds you could feel the shift. The room got quiet, the energy softened, and everything else faded out. It was one of those moments where you don’t need to direct anything. You just step back and let it happen. Tears, smiles, little laughs in between. That’s the stuff that matters.
Two Brides, Two Dresses, One Incredible Look
One of my favourite parts of the entire day was their look. Devon in this soft, elegant white dress, classic but still completely her. And Christina in a bold, stunning red dress that just owned the room. The contrast between the two was unreal, especially against the warm tones of the cabin and the snow outside. It didn’t feel like a “twist” on tradition. It just felt right. They helped each other get ready, fixing little details, adjusting dresses, sharing quiet moments. There was no separation, no “this side versus that side.” It was just them, doing everything together. And yeah, the shoes deserved their own moment. White heels on one side, red Converse with rainbow laces on the other. Clean, fun, unapologetically them.
The Balcony Portraits and Winter Wonderland Photos
Before leaving for the ceremony, we stepped outside and onto the balcony. Snow everywhere, soft winter light, and that quiet stillness you only get in the middle of December. These are the moments where winter weddings really shine. No distractions, no noise, just clean, simple, beautiful space around them.
We kept it easy. Let them move, talk, laugh, stay warm, then move again. Nothing forced. Just real moments in a winter setting that actually felt like winter.
First Looks with Family and Bridal Party
Instead of doing a traditional first look just between the two of them, they flipped it and made it about everyone. Family and bridal party waited downstairs while Christina and Devon came down together. And the reactions were everything.
Tears, shock, huge smiles, people covering their mouths, people clapping. You could feel how much love was in that room. It wasn’t about the dresses. It was about seeing them together, fully ready, fully present, about to get married. Right after that, they started handing out gifts. Handmade flowers for the bridal party, little personal touches for family, and some very fun, slightly nerdy Harry Potter inspired gifts on Devon’s side. Again, it just felt like them.
A Ceremony That Felt Personal from Start to Finish
The ceremony space leaned into the season in the best way. Christmas trees, warm lights, touches of red and green, and subtle Harry Potter details layered in without taking over. It felt festive, but still elegant. Colourful, but still intentional. They walked down the aisle together, which always hits differently. And instead of one officiant, their entire bridal party played a role in the ceremony. Each person had a part, which made everything feel more personal, more connected, and honestly way more emotional than a traditional format. There wasn’t a single moment that felt generic. Everything had meaning.
A Ceremony Entrance No One Will Forget
And then… Santa showed up. Mid ceremony. Throwing rose petals down the aisle like it was the most normal thing in the world. Everyone lost it. Laughter, confusion, pure joy. It broke any remaining tension and turned the whole room into this shared moment of “what is happening right now” in the best possible way. That’s the kind of energy you can’t plan perfectly, but when it works, it really works.
Storybook Guest Photos and Real Connection
After the ceremony, instead of the usual quick group shots, they did something completely different. They set up this massive storybook backdrop, like a real life fairytale, and made it a point to take a photo with every single guest. Not rushed. Not just a handshake and move on. Actual time with each person.
It doubled as a way to introduce people, connect families, and create something meaningful beyond just a photo. From a documentary perspective, it was amazing to watch. From a human perspective, it made the whole day feel even more intentional.
Winter Portraits in the Snow
We stepped outside again later for a few more portraits, and this is where the winter setting really came through. Fresh snow, quiet surroundings, and the contrast of those dresses against the landscape. They ran through the snow, helped each other move, laughed when it got cold, and leaned into it instead of fighting it. Those are always the best winter photos. Not when everything is perfect, but when everything is real.
A Reception Full of Energy, Colour, and Emotion
The reception kept that same energy going. Christmas decor, warm lighting, a room full of people who were genuinely happy to be there. No forced moments, no awkward pauses, just a steady flow of laughter, speeches, reactions, and connection. The speeches hit hard. The kind where people laugh one second and wipe their eyes the next. Kids running around, friends cheering, family fully locked in. Everything felt alive.
Final Thoughts
Christina and Devon’s wedding wasn’t about following a formula. It was about building a day that actually reflected who they are. Queer, colourful, emotional, a little nerdy, and completely full of love. From the quiet moments in the morning, to the laughter during the ceremony, to running through the snow together, it never felt staged or forced. It just felt real. And those are always the weddings that stay with you.
