We first met Jessica and Michael at Canada’s Bridal Show, and right away, it felt like one of those conversations where you just know this is going to be a good fit. The old stone, the trees, the water, the chapel, the cozy indoor spaces, it all works so well together, especially in winter.

Jessica got ready at Ancaster Mill with her aunt, her grandmother, and her maid of honour, which made the morning feel really personal. There is something beautiful about those quieter wedding morning moments when the room is not packed with too many people, and the energy is just the people who really matter. Everyone was excited, but there was also this emotional calm in the room. Jessica was glowing, laughing, taking it all in, and counting down the minutes until she could finally marry Michael.

We could move between rooms, use different light, give Jessica space to get dressed, and still capture all the emotional little moments with her family. It meant the photos had variety without us needing to force anything or move everyone around like a production set.

Jessica’s dress was honestly incredible. It was from AV Bridal in Mississauga, but she made it completely her own through custom alterations. The sleeves, chest, and straps were all redesigned from the original, which gave the gown this unique, personal, almost regal feeling. It fit the winter wedding theme perfectly, but more importantly, it felt like Jessica. It had drama, elegance, and that little bit of queen energy that made the whole look so strong.

Monika Lidia Beauty did such a beautiful job with hair and makeup. Jessica looked stunning, but still like herself, which is always the sweet spot. The whole look worked perfectly with the candlelit ceremony, the snowy portraits, and the darker reception atmosphere later in the night.

One of the biggest reasons I love photographing weddings at Ancaster Mill is that the whole day can happen in one place. Jessica got ready there, the ceremony was in the chapel, the portraits happened around the venue, and the reception and party were all in the same location. As Chelsey, Leo, and I took our places, we knew this ceremony was going to be emotional. Michael’s reaction when he saw Jessica walking down the aisle said everything. Jessica and Michael walked out of the chapel surrounded by their closest people, sparklers glowing around them, fresh snow coming down, and the whole scene looked like a movie. The room had this beautiful mix of candlelight, warm tones, wood, stone, and medieval inspired details that made Jessica’s vision come to life without feeling too literal. It felt like a romantic winter banquet, but still elegant and modern enough for a luxury wedding. That is a hard balance to pull off, and this reception space handled it beautifully.

The grand entrance was iconic. Instead of walking in and going straight to their seats, Jessica and Michael went right into party mode with their guests, glow sticks in hand, and the dance floor came alive before dinner even started. I always love when couples break the usual flow a little bit and do something that matches their energy. It instantly told everyone, okay, this is not going to be a boring reception.

The speeches were such a good mix of hilarious and emotional. Michael’s father had everyone laughing, and then Michael’s son delivered a speech that completely shifted the room. It was heartfelt, honest, and full of love. You could feel how important this day was not just for Jessica and Michael as a couple, but for their family. Those are the moments I care about most during receptions, because they show the real reason everyone is gathered in the room.

Chelsey and I moved some candles near the fireplace and set up a darker, more dramatic look for Jessica and Michael. Sometimes five or ten minutes is enough to make something completely different from the rest of the day.

The drinks looked beautiful, tasted amazing, and added another personal detail to the night. And with Michael and Jessica’s Portuguese background, you already know dinner and dancing were going to matter. The food had to be good, and Ancaster Mill absolutely delivered.

Once the party started, the dance floor stayed packed. It had that Portuguese wedding energy where nobody is just politely swaying in the corner. People were dancing, laughing, drinking, singing, and fully committing to the night. From a photography perspective, that is the dream. Okay, Ancaster Mill knows how to feed people. Wedding food can be tricky because you are serving a lot of guests at once, but this felt elevated in the best way. The presentation was beautiful, the plates looked intentional, and the food felt like part of the wedding experience instead of just something that happened between speeches and dancing.

The courses looked amazing, from the beef with shrimp skewers to the roasted chicken and seared salmon. Everything felt polished without being too precious, which is exactly what you want at a wedding. Guests should feel like they are being treated, but they should still be able to relax and enjoy the meal.

One of my favourite details was the signature cocktails. Jessica and Michael had custom drinks made just for them, and those little touches always make a wedding feel more personal. Before bringing them out, Leo, Chelsey, and I went ahead to set up the lighting. We wanted everything ready so Jessica and Michael would only have to be outside for a short amount of time. Winter portraits are all about planning. The more prepared we are, the easier it feels for the couple, and the better the photos usually are.

When Jessica and Michael stepped outside, it was pure winter wonderland meets Game of Thrones. The waterfall, the snow, the dark night, the dramatic lighting, and the two of them wrapped together made the whole scene feel unreal. It was cold, chaotic, beautiful, and completely worth it.
