Butterfly Conservatory Engagement Photos - Alex & Andrew

Butterfly Conservatory Engagement Photos

We met Alex and Andrew at the National Bridal Show, and between her awesome neon pink hair and bubbly personality, Alex immediately stood out to us, so we were super excited when Alex and Andrew asked to meet with us to chat about their wedding. During our meeting, they mentioned they were considering doing their engagement shoot at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, but were slightly concerned that it would be a bit of a drive and inquired if it would be a problem. Nope! We told them what we tell all our couples: we want them to pick a location that is special to them and has some meaning. We are always happy to consider engagement shoot locations that are outside of the GTA if they are really cool and unique, and as Diego and I haven’t shot at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory yet, let alone ever visit it, it definitely qualified!!

When we arrived at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, we were all rather taken back by how humid it was inside, and we were even given a heads-up by one of the staff members who greeted us that our cameras may get foggy. While it took us all a couple of minutes to adjust to the humidity, the serenity and beauty of the conservatory helped us quickly forget and enjoy the peacefulness of the place. We had the whole conservatory to ourselves that morning for an hour, right before the doors opened to the public and the chaos that is school field trips took over. :)

The Butterfly Conservatory is not a large space, but it has so many unique features that we all had a blast discovering all the cool spots and hidden gems that can be found around the conservatory. From waterfalls and ponds, large bright blue butterflies, turtles, and funny little birds that resembled kiwi birds, gorgeous trees and plants, and to the little bistro lights that adorned the place, the diversity of the space and its uniqueness was just such a treat to capture for Alex and Andrew. Alex’s pink hair and pink dress definitely popped in front of this lush background, and created a gorgeous contrast! So lovely!

The highlight of the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory engagement shoot with Alex and Andrew was the butterfly release. Alex and Andrew were given a pretty box with butterflies, and were told that once we were ready for the release, to gently tap on the bottom of the box to wake the butterflies up so when the lid is lifted, they all fly out. Well, it didn’t quite work, but I can’t say we were very disappointed. When the lid was lifted, we definitely had a few butterflies fly out and, along with the look of amazement on Alex’s face, it created for a beautiful moment for us to capture. The remaining butterflies took their time waking up and did not fly out very far, which allowed us all to admire the butterflies more closely and capture them resting on Alex and Andrew. The look of glee on Alex's face was amazing! :D

Soon after the release, it was time for the school kids to start making their way in, so we stepped outside to capture a few more shots with Alex and Andrew in the cool air. It was a nice change from the humidity of the Butterfly Conservatory, and a perfect end to our butterfly adventure. Thank you Alex and Andrew for this amazing idea and the opportunity to capture such a unique engagement shoot!

And for all you engaged couples and wedding photographers in and around the GTA area looking for cool and unique spots for an engagement photoshoot, the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory will not disappoint!! It’s breathtaking!
