Ball’s Falls Conservation Area Wedding

We were all watching the weather very closely the days leading up to Liz and Cesar’s wedding at Ball’s Falls Conservation area. The forecast promised rain…A LOT of rain. Liz and Cesar were hoping for a romantic outdoor ceremony in the courtyard of the Glen Elgin Room at the Center for Conservation, and Diego and I were super excited to go exploring Ball’s Falls and the historic village with them, but that was all dependent on the weather. As we drove to Niagara on the morning of their wedding, any hope for rain-free weather was gone. It rained and it rained and it rained the whole drive there, But, as the famous saying goes: “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. And make lemonade we did! With all the planning and plan changes that Liz and Cesar had to deal with, they became somewhat of pros in rolling with the punches - they were prepared with a plan B for their ceremony, and they brought umbrellas to use during the portraits. Rain or no rain, they were determined to have the best time celebrating their love, and we couldn’t wait to get started and see where the rain took our imagination that day.

When we finally arrived at Ball’s Falls Conservation Area, the rain seemed to be mocking us. As soon as it seemed the rain was about to stop, it would start again. As we waited for Liz to arrive for the ceremony, it was up to Cesar to make the final call - set up for an outdoor ceremony while the rain had paused, and hope for the best, or not risk it and set up indoors. Thankfully, Cesar opted for the safer approach, and good thing he did, as the rain resumed once again while the ceremony space was being set up at the Glen Elgin Room.

As family and friends filled the room, everyone greeted each other with the biggest embraces. Many of the guests haven’t seen each other in what seemed like forever due to Covid. Today though, today was different. Today they were able to finally come together for a celebration, a celebration of Liz and Cesar’s love. When the guests were finally seated, and Cesar walked down the aisle with his mom, wiping away a tear, everyone’s hearts melted. The room was filled with so much emotion. And then Liz walked in accompanied by her son, and it was game over. Even waterproof makeup stood no chance. Liz looked absolutely breathtaking in her stunning white gown with the biggest smile on her face. It was so special for us to capture all the sweet moments that Liz and Cesar shared while proclaiming their love for each other. They laughed and they cried, Liz’s kids beamed with pride, and the guests radiated all the love and happiness. It was impossible not to get all the warm fuzzy feelings as they said their I do’s.

As luck would have it, the rain paused long enough after the ceremony for us to head outside for Liz and Cesar’s couple portraits and wedding party photos around Ball’s Falls and the Historic Village. With umbrellas in hand, puddles and the squishy ground didn’t phase anyone as we explored the gorgeous grounds of Ball’s Falls Conservation area. Liz embraced the fate of the hem of her dress and was just glowing as she walked hand in hand with Cesar. Everyone was just so elated to be able to go exploring this quaint storybook village, featuring a historic church and barn, and take advantage of such a picturesque scenario. We could have stayed there all day, but we had a reception to get back to.

Back inside, where it was warm and dry, it was time to feast, drink, and celebrate. Speeches had everyone cracking up, the wedding cake got us drooling, and the DJ had everyone ready to hit the dance floor. Before it was time to start the party though, Diego and I had a few more ideas up our sleeves. The sun was setting and the rain was drizzling - the perfect combination for creating some fun rainy day shots.

Liz and Cesar were absolutely phenomenal to work with. They were patient as we worked to get the light just right, while also dodging passing cars, holding an umbrella, listening to instructions, staring in each others eyes lovingly, and trying not to fall into a puddle. Once we were confident we got the shot, we gave Liz and Cesar a sneak peek (something we don’t often do on the day of the wedding) of what we were working on, and their reaction made all the work and effort worth while. With the portraits complete, it was time for Liz and Cesar to break it down on the dance floor.

Liz and Cesar, thank you so much for having us be a part of your big day, for putting your trust in us, and for just being your awesome selves. Diego and I couldn’t have asked for a better day, rain and all.
